Dream Visits From Loved Ones in Spirit: How to Tell if it's a Real Visit

Are my loved ones on the other side visiting me in dreams?

I’m often asked whether dreams of our loved ones in Spirit are real visits. The answer is that some dreams are true visits, and some are not. Here’s how to recognize the difference.

When a Loved One Visits Through a Dream

When a loved one in Spirit visits you in a dream, the experience will feel vivid, real, and deeply present. It will feel as though you are truly with them—not just remembering them. The overall feeling is loving, peaceful, and meaningful.

When you wake, you may feel emotional and even cry, but the emotion is often accompanied by a sense of comfort, connection, or gratitude. There is usually a clarity to the experience that stays with you.

I have had at least six dream visits from my daughter, Keira, as of this writing. In each dream, she appeared at different ages of her life. Every time I woke up, I felt it was a profound gift. I sobbed tears of gratitude, not sadness, because I knew I had just been with her.

If you experience a dream visit, I encourage you to write it down. Journaling helps you preserve not only the details, but also the feeling of the connection, so you can return to it later. You may also want to record other signs you receive from your loved one, as these experiences often build over time.

When Dreams Are Not Visits

You may also dream about your loved ones in ways that feel distressing, confusing, or upsetting. These dreams can include fear, chaos, or unresolved emotions.

These are not visitations from your loved ones in Spirit. Instead, they are your mind’s way of processing grief.

Dreaming is one way your psyche works through difficult emotions and experiences. These dreams can still be meaningful and important, but they are part of your internal healing process rather than a direct connection with your loved one in Spirit.

Enhancing Your Ability to Receive Dream Visits

Your ability to experience dream visits is closely connected to the quality of your sleep. Dreams primarily occur during REM sleep, which is a critical stage for both emotional processing and restoration. Supporting your sleep can help create the conditions for deeper, more vivid dream experiences.

Helpful practices include maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, going to bed and waking at the same time each day, sleeping in a dark environment, and limiting screen exposure from phones, tablets, and televisions for at least one to two hours before bedtime.

Reducing stress is also important. Practices such as guided audio meditations can help calm your mind and body before sleep. These meditations support a shift into your parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” state—which allows for deeper, more restorative sleep.

When your mind is racing, worrying, or overthinking, your body remains in a sympathetic “fight or flight” state, which can disrupt sleep and limit dream depth.

Journaling before bed can also help. Writing down your thoughts or making a simple list for the next day can release mental tension and make it easier to relax.

Setting Intentions for Dream Visits

You can invite your loved one to visit you in your dreams by setting a clear and gentle intention. This can be done by speaking it aloud, thinking it quietly, or writing it down. Some people like to place a written note under their pillow as a symbolic gesture of openness to connection.

You may also choose to place items such as crystals near your bed, like rhodochrosite or smoky quartz, to support a calm and receptive state.

At the same time, it’s important to release attachment to when or how a visit may occur. Dream visits require energy, and both your state and your loved one’s energy to connect play a role. Loved ones in Spirit exist on a much higher frequency than we do here in the physical world. It takes considerable effort and energy on their part to temporarily meet us on a lower frequency, especially if we are in a lower emotional state.

Feelings of pressure, doubt, or urgency can also create resistance for you. A more open, trusting approach allows the experience to unfold naturally.

Connection with your loved one is still present, even when it doesn’t come through in dreams. Trust that it can happen in the way that is most supportive for you.
