What to Expect During an Evidential Medium Reading
What to Expect During an Evidential Medium Reading
If you’re considering a session and wondering what to expect during an evidential medium reading, you’re not alone. Many people feel a mix of curiosity, hope, and even nervousness—especially with how mediumship is often portrayed in movies and television.
In this article, I’ll walk you through what an evidential medium reading is, how to prepare, and what typically happens during a session—so you can feel more comfortable, informed, and open to the experience.
The Healing Power of Mediumship
If you’ve experienced the death of a loved one, it is natural to want to know that they are okay and that you’re still connected to them.
When my daughter died unexpectedly, nothing was more important to me than maintaining a connection with her and knowing that she was okay.
My personal journey led me to understand how deeply healing mediumship can be, and that it is something sacred rather than something to be feared. Although I hadn’t expected it, my loss led me to study and become certified in evidential mediumship. Now, I offer evidential mediumship readings to help others connect with their loved ones in Spirit so they can find courage, hope, and healing while learning to live after loss.
Feeling nervous or wondering what to expect during a reading is completely normal. I write this article from both perspectives—being a grieving mother seeking validation of a connection with my daughter in Spirit, and being an evidential medium myself—so you can experience a reading in the most supportive, loving, and grounded way possible.
What Is an Evidential Medium?
An evidential medium is someone who can receive specific, validating information from loved ones in Spirit and share it with you to help confirm the connection.
This evidence may include details such as:
- Personality traits
- Shared memories
- Characteristics
- Career or hobbies
- Cause of passing
An evidential mediumship reading is a session where this information and messages are communicated to you.
Not all mediums work this way. If having a sense of “proof” or validation is important to you—as it was for me—then an evidential mediumship reading is what you are looking for.
You may find that you resonate more with some mediums than others. When you resonate with a medium, the connection often feels stronger and more natural. Trust your intuition here—your loved ones in Spirit often play a role in guiding you toward the right connection.
Many people also find it helpful to wait some time after a loved one’s passing before having a reading. This allows space for emotional processing and can help the connection feel clearer.
How to Prepare for Your Reading
Once you’ve found a medium you resonate with and scheduled a reading (typically 15–60 minutes, and offered via phone, Zoom, or in person), there are a few ways you can prepare.
A mediumship reading involves three components:
- You (the sitter)
- The medium
- Your loved one(s) in Spirit
While a medium cannot guarantee which loved one will come through, setting a clear intention can support the connection.
You can help create a supportive environment for your reading by:
- Setting the intention to connect with your loved one(s)
- Letting your loved one in Spirit know about the reading and inviting them to join
- Releasing expectations or attachment to specific outcomes
- Remaining open to receive
- Avoiding alcohol or substances beforehand
- Limiting the number of people present during the reading
- Focusing on the love you share
- Taking a few moments to breathe, ground, and center yourself
You may also want to have a pen and paper nearby to take notes. Above all, allow yourself to relax and be present.
What Happens During an Evidential Medium Reading
I'll share what happens during evidential medium readings that I conduct.
At the beginning of your session, I will welcome you and briefly explain how the reading will work. Then, I will focus on establishing a connection with your loved one(s) in Spirit.
I receive information through intuitive senses—such as images, feelings, sounds, or impressions—and begin sharing what I receive as the connection develops.
These intuitive senses may include:
- Clairvoyance (clear seeing): What I see
- Clairsentience (clear feeling): What I feel
- Claircognizance (clear knowing): What I understand
- Clairaudience (clear hearing): What I hear
- And others such as sensing smells, tastes, or emotions
At times, interpreting this information can feel a bit like a gentle game of charades. The information I receive may not immediately make sense to me, but it often holds meaning for you.
For example, in one reading, an image of a full sail on a sailboat came through. This connected to a meaningful song lyric for the client. Sometimes validation comes immediately, and other times it becomes clear later.
If your loved one passed before you were old enough to remember them, some details may need to be confirmed with family afterward.
Toward the end of the session, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions or request that I try to connect with another loved one, if appropriate.
After the reading, I recommend taking some time for yourself to reflect. These experiences can be deeply meaningful and emotional, and giving yourself space afterward can be very supportive.
How Often Should You Have a Reading?
There is no right or wrong answer.
Some people feel complete after one reading. Others may feel called to have another in the future—either with the same medium or a different one.
In my personal and professional experience, I recommend doing what feels healthy and supportive for you.
There can be a natural balance in maintaining connection with loved ones in Spirit without it becoming something you feel dependent on. Our loved ones continue growing, learning, and experiencing on the Other Side—and we are meant to continue doing the same here.
In the meantime, we can experience a new way of relating to them…
a continued connection, a continued love…
a love between worlds.
